What a soft-gel build is for

A builder overlay is a splint. It goes over your own nail, cures hard enough to stop the nail flexing at the stress point, and stays flexible enough to move with the nail rather than snapping away from it. For anyone whose nails peel, split at the sides or bend and tear before they get any length, that combination is the fix.

It is not primarily a length service. You can gain a few millimeters past the free edge, but if you want a dramatic change of length or a tapered shape, acrylic is the right call and we would rather send you there than build something that will not hold. For length on a soft-gel system, Gel X is the option to look at.

What T.A.P gel actually is

T.A.P is a hybrid gel: it carries the strength of a hard gel with the flexibility and comfort of a soft one, and it is formulated to sit about 30% lighter on the hand than traditional acrylic. It is monomer-free, low-odor and non-drip, and it cures under LED or UV without the heat spike that makes some builder gels burn.

Three practical consequences. It feels like your own nails rather than something added to them, which is the most common thing clients say after the first set. There is no acrylic-table smell, so it suits anyone sensitive to that. And an overlay or a fill-in runs about 25 to 30 minutes plus design time, which makes it one of the quicker ways to keep a set looking new.

It is at its best as a natural nail overlay or on short extensions — that is what it was built for, and it is where the lighter weight actually pays off.

The three options on this part of the menu

• Builder gel — $60 & up. Brushed on and sculpted over your own nail, cured in stages. The standard overlay.
• T.A.P gel — $60 & up. The hybrid: hard-gel strength, soft-gel flex, about 30% lighter than acrylic, and no burn under the lamp. The one to pick for a natural nail overlay or short extensions.
• Gel X — $65 & up. Full-coverage soft gel tips rather than a brushed build, for when you want length as well as protection.

All three are rebalanced rather than replaced: a T.A.P or builder fill is $48 & up, and a fill on an almond, coffin or stiletto shape is $55 & up.

Soft gel against traditional acrylic

• Feel. Lighter on the hand and slightly flexible. People who have found acrylic heavy usually get on with a builder immediately.
• Removal. Gentler. It files and soaks off with less work on the nail plate underneath.
• Odor. None to speak of, which matters more than people expect if you are sensitive to the acrylic table.
• Strength ceiling. Lower. On long, tapered shapes acrylic wins and it is not close.
• Price. Builder gel is $60 & up against $55 & up for an acrylic full set gel, so the choice is about your nails rather than your budget.

Recovering from a bad set

The most common reason people arrive asking about builder gel is a set removed badly somewhere else — nails thinned by an e-file, or peeled off in a shell. Those nails are not damaged permanently; the nail plate is dead keratin and it grows out. What they need is protection for the eight to twelve weeks it takes.

A builder overlay does two jobs at once: it stops the flexing that causes further splitting, and it stops you picking at the ridges while they grow. Keep it on through two or three appointments and the nail underneath comes back in noticeably better condition. Upkeep, and if you bite your nails

Builder and T.A.P sets are rebalanced every two to four weeks at $48 & up, the same cycle as acrylic. The regrowth at the cuticle gets filled and the surface re-leveled rather than the whole set being replaced.

Cuticle oil matters more here than anywhere else on the menu, because a flexible overlay lives or dies on the health of the nail underneath it. Once a day, worked into the skin around the nail rather than dabbed on top.

For nail biters, a builder works and acrylic works better on the hardest cases. There is nothing soft left to bite and the habit tends to break within a few weeks. Say at the start that this is what you are trying to fix — it changes how we build the set and what we suggest next time.
